Ivanovski at the International regulatory conference in Ohrid

Minister of Information Society and Administration Ivo Ivanovski addressed the opening session of ’International regulatory conference 2015' in Ohrid. The event was organized by The Agency for Electronic Communications.

 

Ivanovski was speaking about the importance of the ICT development which is directly related to the broadband Internet access. ”According to the World Bank, every 10% increase in broadband penetration results in corresponding increase of 1 to 1.5 % in GDP, while according to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, additional doublings of the broadband speed provides a GDP growth of 0.3 % in the country”, Ivanovski said.

 

”The Republic of Macedonia is an active participant in the UN Broadband Commission”, Minister said, ”and has already fulfilled the objectives given for the period until 2015: 40% of households having Internet access and 50% Internet use. ”According to the data of the State Statistical Office, about 60% of the households in the country have broadband Internet access.”

 

The Government of the Republic of Macedonia continues to implement the programme for Information Society Development following the latest trends. Several goals are set to be accomplished: 80 percent coverage of the population with broadband internet, the number of households that use Internet to continue to increase, small and medium enterprises online sales of products to reach 33 % , as well as , reducing the roaming services costs and increasing the number of electronic public services.
