Use of information and communication technologies in households, first quarter of 2010
According to the data of the State Statistical Office of the Republic of Macedonia, in the first quarter of 2010, the share of the households with Internet access increased by 4.3 percentage points in comparison with the same period in 2009. Participation of the households with broadband Internet connection in the total number of households increased from 33.8% in 2009 to 37.2% in 2010, while their participation in the number of households with Internet access remained at the same level in these two comparison periods (around 81%).
The most common broadband connection was by ADSL technologies, used by 50.4% of the households with Internet access.
In the first quarter of 2010, 56.4% of the total population aged 15-74 used a computer, while 51.9% used the Internet, which is 1.9 percentage points more than in the same period last year. Internet was most used by pupils and students, i.e. 93.8%.
In order to protect their private computer and data, 75.1% of individuals that accessed the Internet in the last 12 months used some kind of IT security software or tool (anti-virus, anti-spam, firewall etc.), and 86.0% had experienced some security related problems through using the Internet for private purposes in the last 12 months.
