Skopje, 2nd April 2012

The project of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia for installing internet-booths in rural areas will be a part of the global agenda of the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, as a positive example of activities in regard with the information society development.

The Minister of information society and administration Ivo Ivanovski addressed the participants in the Meeting of the Broadband Commission for Digital Development in Ohrid, presenting projects that the Government of the Republic of Macedonia has carried out in the field of information society, and pointing out the one for installing internet-booths in rural areas.

The Commission itself makes commitments and sets goals for broadband network development all over the world, especially in developing countries, in order to provide all citizens with equal possibility for using services offered by the speed internet, said Ivanovski.

He also pointed out that the International Telecommunication Union would follow realization of the project, as a global example of an activity directed toward development of that aspect of information society.

This project at 680 locations includes 32 thousand citizens, with one megabit speed in a second, which is more than required by the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, said Ivanovski.

The results of the internet-booth project implementation in the Republic of Macedonia will be published in a special report of the Broadband Commission for Digital Development.

Statistical data show that about a hundred users are being connected monthly in Macedonia, which is a very positive effect, knowing the fact that connection to the Internet is an excellent precondition for the GDP growth.

At the work meeting of the Commission was also presented the report produced by the Ericson about the connection of information and communication technologies with climate change.
